How to measure your closet for a system
A good closet system is about the layout, not just the boxes — so the measurements that matter are wall lengths, ceiling height and how you want to store. Here's how to capture them for a free 3D design and exact quote.
-
Measure each wall of the closet
Measure the length of every wall the system will run along, in inches, corner to corner. For a walk-in, measure all the walls you want fitted; for a reach-in, measure the inside width between the side walls. Sketch the closet from above and label each length.
-
Measure the ceiling height
Measure floor to ceiling in a few places — heights vary across a room. This sets how much you can stack: a double-hang section plus a top shelf needs about 84″, so most closets fit two hanging levels with shelving above.
-
Mark the door and any obstructions
Note the door position and swing, plus windows, sloped ceilings, vents, light switches and the baseboard height. These decide where hanging and drawers can go and where to leave a gap.
-
Plan your storage mix
Think in zones: double-hang (two rails) for shirts and folded-length items, long-hang for dresses and coats, shelves for folded clothes and shoes, and drawers for everything that should be hidden. Rough out how much of each you need — we balance it in the design.
-
Note hanging clearances
As a planning rule, allow about 42″ of height for each double-hang rail, ~70″ for long-hang, and 12–14″ of depth for hanging rods. Reach-in shelving runs about 14–16″ deep. You don't have to be exact — these just help you picture the layout.

Closet measuring FAQs
How do I measure a walk-in closet for a system?
Measure each wall corner to corner, the ceiling height in a few spots, and the door position and swing. Sketch the closet from above with those lengths labelled. Send it over and we plan the elevation wall by wall around your storage mix.
What are standard closet hanging dimensions?
Allow about 42″ of height per double-hang rail, ~70″ for long-hang items like dresses and coats, and 12–14″ of depth for hanging rods. Shelving runs about 14–16″ deep. Most closets fit two hanging levels plus a top shelf in a standard 8-foot ceiling.
How much does a closet system cost?
Closet systems start at $149.99 per linear foot of cabinetry — an 8-foot wall starts around $1,200. A full walk-in with three fitted walls is quoted exactly from your free 3D design. See the cabinet cost guide for more.
Are the systems adjustable after installation?
Yes. Shelving is adjustable so the system adapts as your storage changes, and every layout is modular and configured to your room and ceiling height rather than a fixed template.
